Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) is a leading higher education institution based in Cork City on the south coast of Ireland. CIT was voted the Irish Institute of Technology of the Year for the third time in five years in 2015.
The institute offers a wide range of flexible full-time and part-time courses (at all levels up to and including PhD) in art & design, business, engineering, humanities, music, nautical studies and science & information technology.
CIT currently has in the region of 12,000 registered students with approximately 2,000 new entries year on year.
The Department of Technology-Enhanced Learning (engaged in the FlipIT project) is an academic department in the Cork Institute of Technology. The department functions across four main thematic areas. Distance Education, Research and Innovation, Staff Development and Support and Commercial Development.
Online Distance Education:
The department has a special responsibility with regard to developing and supporting online distance education courses offered by the institute and furthermore in helping develop and implement strategy in that area.
Research and Innovation:
Research happens at both at national and international level into big trends and ideas in e-learning and technology-enhanced learning with current projects touching on topics such as learning analytics, game-based learning, gamification, wearable tech and augmented reality. Our research and development work informs the central work we do with staff and students in the Cork Institute.
Staff Development:
This involves working with staff to develop and support better ways to facilitate all aspects of the learning process online, from online teaching though to assessment, communication and peer learning. The department provides training and support for staff in the use of teaching tools and platforms such as the Blackboard Learning Management System and the Adobe Connect Live E-learning system to augment or complement CIT’s conventional face-to-face courses.
Commercial Development:
The Technology-Enhanced Learning team is engaged with real-world e-learning projects with commercial clients on a regular basis. Over the years, the team has worked with clients such as Citi, Vodafone, Postbank and O2 on e-learning projects. This work ensures that the team keeps abreast of new technologies in the field whilst also bringing innovations to our other areas in the Cork Institute of Technology.
